Three care basics to start with

Most plant trouble comes down to a few simple habits. Get these right and the rest gets much easier.

  • Light first

Most houseplants prefer bright, indirect light near a window. Match the plant to the spot rather than forcing a spot to work.

  • Water less than you think

More plants suffer from overwatering than underwatering. Check that the top inch of soil is dry before you reach for the watering can.

  • Drainage matters

Use pots with a drainage hole so roots never sit in standing water. Empty the saucer after watering.

A few from the collection

Here are three of my favorites. See all six on the plants page.

Snake plant with tall upright leaves in a pot

Snake Plant

Sansevieria trifasciata

A great first plant. It tolerates low light and infrequent watering, so overwatering is the main thing to avoid.

Light:
Low to bright indirect light
Water:
Every 2 to 3 weeks, let soil dry fully
Golden pothos with trailing heart-shaped leaves

Golden Pothos

Epipremnum aureum

Trim long vines to keep it full, and root the cuttings in water to grow more plants for free.

Light:
Low to bright indirect light
Water:
When the top inch of soil is dry
Monstera deliciosa with large split leaves

Monstera

Monstera deliciosa

Give it room to spread and a moss pole to climb. New leaves develop more splits as the plant matures.

Bright indirect light
Water:
When the top 2 inches of soil are dry
